Solar Panel System Maintenance
Do you have a solar system on your Gold Coast or Northern NSW property? Did you know if you don’t maintain your solar system you could be losing 30%-40% or more in production? Some systems we have recently inspected are losing production and some are not even operational anymore. Read more about our recommendations for maintenance.
As with any investment, it is important that regular maintenance is carried out on your solar system. Undertaking regular maintenance will ensure your solar system is operating correctly, efficiently and most importantly safely.
Over time dust and debris will build up on your solar panels, which may compromise the performance of your solar system. In addition, water and moisture seepage, vermin, salt air, hail, wind and sunlight can all cause damage or deterioration to your system.
How often do I need to maintain my solar panel system?
Like all electrical equipment, regular maintenance of your solar system is necessary. It is also necessary to maintain your solar system for warranty purposes. We recommend as a minimum a yearly service and clean and on larger system twice yearly.
Who can undertake routine maintenance on my solar panel system?
Unlike typical electrical products, turning a solar panel system ‘off’ at the switch does not mean that the components no longer pose an electrical hazard. In addition, for roof mounted systems, some maintenance tasks may need to be conducted on the roof which poses additional hazards. Solar systems should only be inspected and maintained by a licenced electrician or Clean Energy Council accredited solar installer. Unfortunately, we see a lot of people offering solar panel cleaning, who aren’t appropriately accredited or insured for this type of work. At AMP’D Electrical & Solar not only are we licensed Master Electricians, we are also CEC accredited see our accreditations here.
What is involved in solar panel system maintenance?
Maintaining your solar system involves much more than simply cleaning your solar panels. Regular maintenance of your solar panel system should ensure:
- solar panels are clean, secure and free of defects
- no parts have deteriorated/corroded
- vents are free of debris
- switches do not have any defects
- wiring has not been damaged/has not deteriorated
- electrical checks to ensure all components are operating as intended
- confirming fittings and cables are securely attached
- reviewing the inverter display panel for recorded faults
- checking that access to the isolator switches has not been impeded, and/or
- making sure the emergency procedures for shutdown and isolation are clearly displayed.
When was the last time you had your solar system serviced? Or has your solar system or inverter stopped working with the recent rain/floods? Did you know AMP’D Electrical & Solar can assist with any solar system maintenance and any insurance reports and claims.
